The Mercedes-Benz W113 SL was developed under the auspices of
Mercedes-Benz Technical Director Fritz Nallinger, Chief Engineer
Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Head of Styling, Friedrich Geiger. The lead
designers were Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi who created its
distinctive, patented, slightly concave hardtop which inspired the
'Pagoda' nickname. The model was manufactured from 1963 through to
1971 and boasted an in-line straight six engine with multi-port
fuel injection. The larger and more popular capacity 280 (2.8
litre) was introduced in 1967 and remained largely unchanged until
1971.

This lefthand drive Californian Mercedes-Benz 280 SL is fitted
with an automatic gearbox and was imported into the UK in 2013 and
purchased by the vendor from his colleague who has a sizeable car
collection. His colleague spent some considerable time to find such
an honest solid car, one that was structurally sound but not so
precious that it couldn't be used. It appears to have always been
well maintained and the car comes with various technical manuals,
some spares, an original tool kit and an original Becker Mexico
Radio Cassette although a modern unit is currently installed. The
car has not required much work since arriving in the UK; there are
two invoices, which total just over £2,000 with works including
attention to the suspension, some window adjustments, gearbox
checks, heater checks and a replacement brake servo etc. The car
was repainted blue/grey metallic before it was imported, the soft
top is in good condition and there is also a matching hardtop. The
car is supplied with a V5C registration document and a MoT test
certificate which expires in August 2017. These distinctive roof
shaped SL models are amongst the best-loved sports cars of their
day and remain highly sought after now by collectors and
enthusiasts alike.
