The acquisition of Bentley Motors in 1998 by Volkswagen AG
brought an end to an era of almost eight decades of cars built by
Bentley. Mulliner Park Ward, the coachbuilding division of
Rolls-Royce that built this model of the Continental, was also sold
to Volkswagen AG and is now simply a personal commissioning
department for the Bentley brand. The Continental Bentleys of
this era are therefore not only examples of the last coachbuilt
Bentley but also the last from Mulliner Park Ward. Only seventy
seven examples were built comprising both the drophead convertible,
such as this car, and its fixedhead coupé counterpart.
Chassis Number 16663 was manufactured in late 1986 and exported
to the USA as the 1987 'model year'; the specification including
all the usual Bentley refinements as well as matching cocktail
cabinets in the driver's and passenger's door and Mouton rugs. It
was registered in southern California and sold to Mr. Ken Berg,
equipped with the then obligatory mobile telephone which the car
still has. It stayed with the family when it passed to his wife,
Ms. Julie Ann Sheltonberg, the car not changing ownership until it
was registered in England in August 2014. During this twenty seven
year single-family ownership, the car covered just 43,000 miles
equating to approximately 1,500 miles per year.
Throughout its ownership, it was meticulously maintained and the
southern Californian climate kept it free of any rust or corrosion.
Arriving in England, the car was despatched for a thorough
servicing, costing almost GBP5,000, in preparation for an extensive
European tour with a new MoT test certificate issued in the
Now resident in Monaco and still with just two owners recorded,
it has been fully serviced (and stamped) to the tune of €10,000 by
the Bentley dealership located in the principality, it is, if
possible, even better than when it left these shores.
Finished in the most attractive colours of black with tan
leather interior, this must represent one of the most desirable of
the true coachbuilt Bentleys. With an impeccable history, it is
eminently useable for any occasion and, being from a very small
number of examples made, will be an attractive addition to any
collection of high quality motorcars.
