The Jaguar XKSS was a road going version of the Jaguar’s hugely successful D-Type racing car. Following Jaguars withdrawal from competition at the end of the 1955 season, Sir William Lyons decided to convert a number of partially completed D-Type chassis and sell them principally into the American market. The unlikely result is one of the most iconic XK’s ever built and the first true road going supercar. Of the 25 unsold D-Type chassis’ only 16 XKSS were built as a fire broke out at the Browns Lane plant destroying 9 of the remaining cars. Only minor changes were necessary to the existing short nose D-Type design including the addition of a passenger door, other changes included fitting a full width windscreen, wipers, shield over exhaust, sidescreens, folding fabric roof, bumpers, luggage rack and rear light clusters.

The Jaguar XKSS offered here at Hofmann's is a TWR (Trevor Williams Racing) professionally built car. Finished in Gloss Black with Ruby Red leather / period Hardura interior. Built in 2015 around the Adrian Raynard designed multi tubular space frame chassis this no expense spared recreation utilises the high quality RAM bodywork. Power comes from a fully rebuilt (wet sump) 4.2 litre straight six XK series twin overhead cam engine with D-Type cam covers and dummy dry sump tank. Carburation comes in the form of triple DOE45 Weber’s on a new inlet manifold enabling the car to produce circa 250 bhp. A fully reconditioned Moss four speed gearbox with an overdrive unit to fourth gear. New Independent suspension all round coupled with dual circuit servo assisted front discs braking system makes for a wonderful and involving drive. This particular test mileage XKSS is fitted with period Dunlop 16” racing light alloy wheels with spinners, full width windscreen, four point racing harnesses, full tonneau, Mohair hood, Smith’s instruments, side pipe exhaust, stainless steel luggage rack, Monza style fuel car, authentic under bonnet detailing and period wood rimmed steering wheel.
