Launched in 1996, the Lotus Elise was the ultimate handling, rear-wheel drive, mid-engined roadster. The Elise has been continually developed throughout its life. One of the most notable changes was in 2001 when the series 2 was launched. Following a change in regulations relating to crash sustainability, the Elise underwent chassis modifications. In 2004, to allow the car to be sold in America Lotus switched from the Rover K series engine to a Toyota unit to pass the emissions regulations. The 111 R version of the series 2 was introduced in 2005, with its high revving Toyota 1.8 litre engine with a Yamaha designed twin-cam head producing 189 bhp. This gives the Elise 111R a 0-60 time of just 4.9 seconds, onto a top speed of 150mph. Thanks to the 6-speed gearbox and the vehicles lightweight the 111R also boasts an impressive combined 38MPG.
