You can ask pretty much any Corvette guy what the paramount vintage Vette is and he’ll probably say “C2”. When you counter with words like “327” and “Muncie”, the phrases “ultimate” and “blue chip” become a natural settling point. And investors clearly agree, since prices on mid-year Chevys remain solid year after year despite the state of the economy. A splendid candidate for any serious gearhead, this mid-year Vette is a numbers-matching, national award winner that, thanks to a meticulous restoration, wears correct Laguna Blue paint, a correct Black interior and better-than-factory aesthetics. Many Vette enthusiasts regard the C2 as Chevrolet’s purest Corvette design. And that’s very easy to understand given this classic’s small dimensions, purpose-built form and athletic demeanor. Of course, those qualities are best viewed through a beautiful restoration and, fortunately, the guys who reworked this Sting Ray did a fantastic job. Since the previous owner’s goal was to have a classic that’s both striking and functional, he made sure the car’s no-hit body was clean, laser-straight and much nicer than any factory-correct original. Once that high level of fit and finish was attained, a buttery layer of correct Laguna Blue basecoat, available only for the 1966 model year, was sealed in glossy clear. And the rest, as they say, is six-figure, show-stopping history!
Thanks to a renewed dedication to motorsports, and heavy influence from the original Mako Shark concept car, the second generation Corvette sports a very athletic appearance. At the front of this convertible, a low-slung clip tucks a stainless-trimmed grille behind thin ‘razor blade’ bumpers and bright, bullet-style parking lamps. Above that grille, hidden headlights highlight a familiar cross-flag emblem while a standard small block hood displays a mandatory “Corvette STING RAY” script. Behind those lights, a clean profile hangs traditional door handles and small fender flags between beefy rocker guards and a stylish bowtie mirror. At the top of that profile, tinted glass rides under polished frames, stainless wipers and a bright white top. And the car’s sloped decklid centers a cross-flag-branded fuel cap above a bright Sting Ray emblem, deluxe tail lamps, two more ‘razor blade’ bumpers and traditional stainless exhaust tips.
Tilt this Corvette’s fiberglass hood and you’ll find an original, 327 cubic inch L79 V8 which hangs a familiar 3858174 casting number behind a correct “HT” suffix stamp and matching partial VIN. Introduced as a formidable companion for street prowling Sting Rays, this high performance small block twists stout 10 to 1 compression into 350 horsepower. At the top of the spry mill, a polished air cleaner funnels wind in to a big Holley carburetor that’s threaded onto fresh stainless fuel lines. Below that juice box, a Winters aluminum intake perfectly complements finned Corvette valve covers. At the back of that intake, chrome-cased ignition shoots spark past correct exhaust manifolds via stainless-sleeved wires. And at the front of those manifolds, a Harrison-branded radiator circulates water through pliable GM hoses and authentic tower clamps. Whoever performed the restoration on this Corvette did an excellent job of creating an attractive, reliable engine bay that’s every bit as detailed as the rest of the car. Bright paint covers the block from its clean oil pan all the way to its chrome oil filler and, as always, looks great against GM’s satin bay. As expected, correct textures and decals are present and accounted for. And details like a rebuilt alternator, a rebuilt master cylinder and a reliable Delco battery ensure this Chevy runs every bit as good as it looks.
Flip this Vette upside down and you’ll find a solid, no-hit chassis that’s in good shape, and today, looks much nicer than when it rolled out of the showroom. At the center of the car’s floors, an original Muncie 4-speed hangs a correct 3885010 casting number over an April 25th, 1966 assembly stamp and matching partial VIN. At the ends of the car, a fully sorted double A-arm front and independent rear suspension is completely detailed down to its fresh shocks, correct springs and standard manual steering. Above that rebuilt suspension, solid floor tubs, which look factory fresh in every way, ride on a straight, Satin Black frame. At the corners of that frame, standard disc brakes mix good handling characteristics with quick and solid stops. At the edges of those brakes, dressed wheels spin 7.75-15 Firestone Deluxe Champion goldlines around classy stainless hubcaps. And everything, from this Corvette’s stainless brake lines to its aluminized exhaust system, is fully sorted and ready to roll!
Open this Chevy’s tossable doors and you’ll find a correct Black interior that’s comprised of a nice assimilation of clean and weather-free components. Seating comes courtesy of firm vinyl thrones that are anchored between Chevrolet-branded lap belts. From the driver’s perch, stock gauges bleed onto their bordering panels in a march toward an aluminum-trimmed glove box, correct Delco AM/FM radio and small chrome shifter. Below that shifter, like-new carpet is protected by prerequisite mats and predictable chrome sills. Above those mats, stainless-trimmed door panels hang traditional armrests between small handles, crank windows and stylish chrome accents. In front of the driver, a satin-spoked steering wheel spins around a brilliant cross-flag emblem. And behind the passengers, a fully carpeted storage compartment boasts just enough room for trophies and a display board.
