An iconic very retro Ford Escort Mk2 RS2000.
Polyurethane front end incorporating four quartz halogen headlamps, front air dam, rubberised tail spoiler, twin bodyside coachline, RS2000 decals, black door mirrors, remote adjust driver’s door mirror, laminated windscreen, tinted glass, opening front quarter windows, hazard warning flashers, heated rear window, separate fuel, water, temperature and oil pressure gauges, quartz clock, glovebox, padded sun visors, two-speed heater, aeroflow ventilation with eye ball vents. Dealer fit accessories; Weathershields sunroof, long range fuel tank.
Using English shells from the Halewood Plant in Merseyside, this Mk2 Escort RS2000 was assembled by The Ford Motor Company of South Africa (Pty) Ltd in Silverton, SA. This example is finished in Diamond White (code OW). A bright finish is pleasing to onlookers and draws much admiration. Minor blemishes to the paintwork are visible and refurbishment has been undertaken to an acceptable standard, for example the rear wheel arch lines are not perfectly circular although structurally sound. All trim sections and RS decals and badges remain intact and in excellent order, and a very clean engine bay is ready for bonnet up exhibiting with factory plates and stickers displayed. A Weathershields Ltd Sunway Roof has been fitted from new. Altogether a very clean and usable example of Ford’s iconic RS2000, ready for enjoyment and fun!
Preceding the widely used Fishnets Recaros in the later RS2000’s, the standard Black Scheel roll top seats remain fitted to this example. In pristine condition owing to a retrim, it is noted that the material used, although an excellent match, is of reproduction fabric. The dashboard and fascia incorporates the centre console bin, glovebox and quartz clock and all functions operate perfectly except the clock. The dash top has been re-covered. The original leather bound three spoke steering wheel features a marked RS central boss cover. The carpets and door cards are in excellent condition and a clean boot displays the rubber strap holding the spare wheel and tool bag. The boot floor is roughly painted in black. Very well presented, a real classic RS Ford interior.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The 1993cc SOHC engine with progressive twin venturi single Weber carburettor has been preserved exactly as Ford RS intended. A sensible sports upgrade exhaust emits an exhilarating yet unobtrusive bark. A top speed of 108mph and 0-60mph is quoted as 8.5 seconds from the 110bhp engine. The original four speed all synchromesh gearbox is light and precise and is factory standard.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Superb reproduction four spoke style 6J x 13in alloy wheels replicate the original RS fitments. All four wheels have only miniscule scratches to the outer rims and the 185/60 R13 tyres have masses of tread remaining. Vacuum servo assisted front disc brakes with rear drums brakes offer good braking commensurate with systems of this era.
This original South African Ford Escort RS2000 was supplied new on 1st January 1978 and imported to the UK in July 2014. Fully UK registered, the history file contains documents pertaining to this process as well as South African clearance paperwork. All taxes, VAT and duties have been paid.
Since arriving in the UK, invoices in the history file from specialist suppliers document a spend in excess of £2,300 on mechanical and cosmetic trim parts to further enhance the vehicles appeal. Representing a very impressive and usable RS2000, this superb Mk2 is ready for the spring and summer show season and importantly can be enjoyed to its full potential.
